Remembering Coach Jerry Welsh

When The Bodacious Bears was released in November 2022, it was more than a documentary premiere. It was a celebration and a tribute to the man who made it all possible. That weekend brought together former players, coaches, fans, and friends to honor Coach Jerry Welsh and the extraordinary success of his Potsdam Bears. Most importantly, Coach Welsh was there, surrounded by his family, and sharing every moment of the celebration.

Coach Welsh’s impact needs little explanation. Over 22 seasons at Potsdam State, he built one of the most dominant programs in NCAA history, defined by championships, consistency, and an unwavering standard of excellence. But The Bodacious Bears was never just about wins or banners. It was about culture. It was about discipline, preparation, and the belief that basketball could be a vehicle for teaching life lessons that lasted far beyond the court.

The 2022 release weekend was designed to capture that spirit. Maxcy Hall once again became a gathering place for generations of Bears, all connected by their shared respect for the man who led them. Coach Welsh, joined by his family, was able to see firsthand the reach of his legacy. Former players who became leaders, teachers, coaches, and mentors themselves, all tracing their foundation back to those years in Potsdam.

The weekend felt like a full-circle moment. The stories told in the documentary came alive in the hallways, at the dinners, and in the conversations that stretched into the night. Laughter, memories, and gratitude filled the air, and Coach Welsh remained, as always, humble and appreciative of it all.

His influence on the game of basketball, on Potsdam State, on the North Country, and on countless lives will endure. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to share his story through The Bodacious Bears and for the incredible journey of bringing this documentary and experience to life with everyone involved.  Coach Welsh's love was the force that brought it all together.

Coach Welsh...
